Everyone with a mobile phone has either read or seen news casts about their negative impact on our health. Many independent sources claim that it’s a big and growing danger but those that are usually sponsored by the multi-billion dollar telecommunications industry tell us that the impact is almost harmless. The fact is, many people and businesses nowadays are very dependent on this technology and for some there is simply no way to function in today’s society without them. We have become a culture of communication convenience. Perhaps a recent article on The Daily Telegraph will make you think twice about getting extremely chatty the next time your cell phone rings and you go to pick it up.
According to the Telegraph article, within four years Canberra Hospital’s Vini Khurana claims the full impact of brain tumors caused by mobile phones will finally be revealed.
Here is a synopsis of the research:
- “In the years 2008-2012, we will have reached the appropriate length of follow-up time to begin to definitively observe the impact of this global technology on brain tumors incidence rates,” Khurana said.
- He also claims, “It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation.”
- “There is a significant and increasing body of evidence – to date at least eight comprehensive clinical studies internationally and one long-term meta-analysis – for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumors,” he states.
- Dr. Khurana said the additional use of accessories, such as some hands-free kits, could have a bigger impact than just having a mobile phone.
- “Bluetooth devices and unshielded headsets can convert the user’s head into an effective, potentially self-harming antenna,” says Khurana.
- He issues us a final warning: “A malignant brain tumor represents a life-ending diagnosis in the vast majority of those diagnosed.”
Being health conscious and remembering the old saying “better safe than sorry,” I found myself using the highly publicized wired and later wireless headsets. In many cities nationally it is illegal to talk on your cell phone unless you are hands free, so there is an added incentive to purchase such products. I too had hands-free kits, based on the popular blue tooth technology, because at the time that was a recommendation given by scientists on how to minimize and avoid radiation coming from a cell phone transmitter. There were even cell phone ratings based on radiation strength which divided mobile phones to dangerous and those which are safe to use. When I was at home I would use a speaker phone instead of my headset.
Now the latest research shows that if you are using headsets and hands-free kits, you are not safe from radiation harm. So I suppose unless we go back to the old fashioned land line phone culture we’ve got no alternative. That’s it – we’re doomed. We were doing home-based RT treatment on our own heads without even realizing it… It’s fortunate that SMS messaging service became so popular among today’s youth, so perhaps that could save our next generation.
So what are the solutions?
- Get a phone package with minimal minutes.
- Don’t answer the phone every time it rings.
- Save the cell phone for necessary communication.
- Answer important calls immediately and then transfer to a land line as soon as possible.
- Use SMS messaging or speakerphone when you want to relay quick information.
Perhaps such news will give a new breath to old technologies and old fashioned methods of communication: house calls.
One final note: Don’t forget that where you keep your mobile phone throughout the day makes a difference. Research studies have showed that it can result in a lower fertility if you keep it in your pants pocket or on your belt.
