Seven Dermatological Tips for Your Skin

skin care

1. Use sunscreen (spf 15 or 30) and REAPPLY every 1.5 hrs!

There are two take-home messages here. First of all it is true that applying sunscreen will not prevent you from getting all types of skin cancer. Malignant melanoma – the most rare but also the most aggressive skin cancer, can appear in places that you may not even suspect, like under the nails and on the soles of your feet. However, you also have to remember that applying the sunscreen can prevent most of the skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, or basal cell carcinoma of the skin. It is important, also, that you get adequate vitamin D for a healthy immune system, so during times of low UV levels it is necessary to get at least 15 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen. Sunscreen use should be utilized during times when UV levels are high and when long-term exposure is planned (like a day at the beach). …continue reading »

Skin Tag

Do you have skin tags? Often times they develop during pregnancy or in the middle years. Most doctors will tell you they are harmless because they are non-cancerous, but while they may be benign there still may be a reason to worry about them according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Pathology [1] which claims skin tags are connected to abnormal lipid levels and could signal metabolic problems before they become significant.

What are they? Skin Tags often look like small mole-sized portions of skin and they protrude above your normal skin by just a few millimeters. Some of them may be the same color as your surrounding skin while others are hyperpigmented like a freckle or a mole. In most cases, they are attached to the underlying skin by a small band of tissue called a stalk or peduncle. You can manipulate the tag without feeling any pain and they appear to be harmless even though they are unsightly. …continue reading »

Finding Green Gluten and Corn-free Cosmetics and Personal Products

makeup.jpgIf you have issues with sensitive skin, and especially if you have recently been diagnosed with allergies or intolerances, you may want to take a long look at your soaps, deodorants, perfumes, and cosmetics bag and perhaps do a little purging this weekend. Many favorite name brand cosmetics and personal products are full of common allergens and known cancer causing toxins. After having had a few strange reactions after using popular drugstore brands over the years I finally switched to high end cosmetics only to find that even those irritated my skin. I soon became an occasional makeup wearer, but now there are better options available for women with sensitive skin and known allergies. Not only will your complexion improve, and your confidence, but you may actually feel healthier too. …continue reading »
