Group Question about Sugar in the Diet
« on: March 18, 2008, 11:01:28 AM »
Just a question on the subject of sugar/sweeteners.....
We are doing a low sugar diet over here, but probably adding a bit more than we should at times.
I am just curious how you all are handling the sugar issue. What are your tricks, substitutes, amounts in recipes, etc.....
Oh, and how does your stuff taste in comparison to what others consider normal?
And how long did it take for your kids to adjust? Any adjustment tricks, too?
What have been the pitfalls, etc.....
Do you allow more sweets for holidays/special occasions? What are your limits? Basic guidelines, etc....
Oh, and one more thing--
What stage in recovery to you consider yourself at? Do you think that has any bearing?

The only sweeteners we use are honey and fruit (juice, applesauce, bananas).  The honey flavor can be overwhelming in certain foods, so it's been tricky.  We've been using fruit juice concentrates from Dynamic Health without any noticeable issues, so that has helped a bit.  We use them in sparkling mineral water for 'soda', as a topping on homemade ice cream, in smoothies, and to flavor our homemade yogurt.  We use it in moderation, but it's a nice little crutch at the moment.

We do allow more during the holidays/parties, etc, but we try to fill the boys up with 'good stuff' before they overdo the 'bad stuff.' J can definitely feel when he's overdone it (tummy ache, etc).

I think J is at a maintenance stage -- he is just always going to have to watch his sugar/carb consumption.  I think dh and I should probably stay low/no sugar for the foreseeable future for a lot of reasons (weight, candida, high cholesterol...) because we definitely feel much better when we do.

Pitfalls?  Ben and Jerry just don't make *anything* low in sugar...  ;)
