If you are not a programmer and don’t have a lot of understanding about how to code games you are probably wondering what mods do and why your kids want them. You’ve probably also heard kids talking about getting Minecraft texture packs or Minecraft skins. Let’s start out with a quick explanation about what all this stuff is.
Difference between Minecraft mods and Texture Packs
A mod (short for modification) is anything which changes the game. These changes are done by programming in java. A texture pack does not count as a Minecraft modification. This is because it’s done without altering any of the game files.
If you’d like to learn more about creating and installing a custom mod using java, check out Youth Digital. They offer an online computer programming class for kids ages 8-14 who want to learn how to make their own custom Minecraft mod. The class runs for a year and offers individualized online tutoring from expert tech teachers.
Installing Minecraft texture packs
Texture pack installation is very easy and also risk free as long you follow the guide I’m referring to below. No game files are changed when installing a texture pack. You just simply download a .zip file (compressed file) from the Minecraft texture site and then drag and drop it to the Minecraft folder inside your computer. To install a Minecraft texture pack please follow this guide.

To make sure a Minecraft mod is safe for downloading always download it from the original source.
To know which the original source is simply make sure you are on any of the larger Minecraft forums (MinecraftForums.net or from a trusted source like Minepacks). One other thing usually assures a Minecraft mod is safe. That is reading the replies in the bottom of the post/thread. This will give you a good indication whether it’s a good mod to install or not.
But don’t let this scare you from downloading and learning how to install Minecraft mods. It’s very rare mods in Minecraft include these kind of things. The few times it has happened it has been discovered quite quickly and users have been alerted of the issue. The Minecraft community includes a large amount of programmers and alike which have a good eye for these kinds of things. Hopefully this will make you feel safer.

What are Minecraft Skins?
All players in Minecraft can change their skins. This is a feature which Mojang (the company/creators of Minecraft) support. Skins are given out for free on multiple different websites. Here is one such skins website. Simply download the skin of your liking and then login to the official Minecraft site and upload the skin in your profile. Once uploaded it will go live. Just make sure you restart the game if you had it open when installing a new Minecraft skin.
You can also create your own skin using a Minecraft skin editor. It’s very easy and a lot of fun.
