Pie crust can be expensive if you are using gluten free ready-made frozen ones. Did you know that you can make an inexpensive pie crust recipe from scratch? Every year around the holidays I make about three or four pies for everybody with my aunt. If I had to buy three or four gluten free frozen pie crusts it would cost a fortune. We make all our pie crusts gluten free so there is no cross-contamination at our family parties. This pie crust recipe calls for only 6 ingredients, 10 minutes preparing, and 15 minutes in the oven.Every year my aunt with celiac and I get together to bake like mad for the holidays. This year we are in the middle of a pie baking frenzy. Our easy pie crust recipe works for just about every filling we have tried. So if you are planning a pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, or even a chocolate cream pie, this crust won’t disappoint. As with all of our recipes, this pie crust is gluten free, corn free, and preservative free. By the way, if you are also allergic to dairy and need to be dairy free, we’ve got that covered too.
Ingredients for Pie Crust
1 1/2 cups of sweet white rice flour
1 1/2 TBSP maple syrup
1/2 tsp sea salt (regular table salt is not corn free)
1 tsp vanilla extract (if you have a corn allergy, you must make yours homemade)
1 tsp guar gum ( a thickening agent for gluten free baking)
3/4 cup of Spectrum Palm Oil (you can also use lard if you’d like. We’ve gotten lard from our grass fed beef supplier: Wallace Farms. Lard makes a wonderfully flaky crust.)
Directions for Pie Crust Recipe
Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix guar gum, salt, and rice flour in a large bowl. Set aside. In a separate mixing bowl add the palm oil, vanilla, and maple syrup. Using a stand mixer, mix the wet ingredients until they are well blended, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed. Then add the dry ingredients, slowly. Continue mixing until a soft pliable dough forms. Scrape out the dough and press it into your favorite 9 inch pie plate. Dough should cover the bottom and sides of the pie plate with ample amounts of dough to put a nice edge on your crust. Bake crust for 15 minutes. Remove and add filling.
