GF-MF Safe Products

Caryn Talty A note from the Editor: This is a brand new section, so please be patient. I hope to itemize a long list of safe grocery products that are gluten, corn, dairy and/or feingold friendly. I will mark items much like do on the recipe index page, [D] means dairy-free, [F1] means Feingold stage 1, [F2] means Feingold stage 2. I will add information as needed, including places to buy, etc…. Please note: manufacturers are known to change ingredients. It is always safest to call the company and verify yourself, especially if you are highly allergic. Corn is a tough one to filter out as it is not an official ‘allergen’ in the United States and is often added to gluten-free foods. Please use this as a helpful guide and not the final word, especially concerning corn-free products. In the beginning of this process I was giving my son foods with citric acid, but as he further detoxified himself from the corn I realized that even this would cause a reaction in him. Although he is not allergic to corn in the familiar sense of the term, he is highly intolerant of it (symptoms do not cause a life-threatening situation; they cause neurological problems). So please make careful considerations before you purchase any product.

Tip: Once you get into a routine and find your favorite brands it is best to buy in bulk and save additional money whenever possible. This is especially true for flour mixes. I typically shop at four major stores each month and store excess goods in my pantry or deep freezer. Organic gluten and corn-free foods can be found at Whole Foods Market, Trader Joes, our local grocer, healthfood stores, through online suppliers, and organic produce can be purchased in bulk from Costco. Costco even has some gluten and corn-free snack brands such as Larabar and Mrs. May’s.

Our kids thought the packet was too spicy, so I would caution anyone with small children to reconsider or use 1/2 the seasoning packet at the very least.

Thai Kitchen Original Pad Thai [D], [F2] This is a stir-fry rice noodle mix with sauce. It cooks up in 15 minutes and serves 2. The package offers a recommended recipe but we just made it as directed on the box. My son loved it. The product is labeled gluten-free. The noodles are made in a facility that processes peanuts and the product contains fish. Here is the ingredient listing: rice, water, pure cane sugar, tamarind (a date-like Asian fruit), tomato, anchovy extract, radish, water, garlic, salt, paprika. We did not notice a reaction with this product. Call: 1-800-967-THAI for more information.

Personal Care Products

Aubrey Organics [D], [F] They have 43 items that are gluten and corn-free. The spokesperson gave me a listing for gluten-free products and one of corn-free products. I cross-referenced the lists and came up with my own listing of GF-MF safe products. Note: this is my list, not the company’s list. Please double check before you place any orders. The company displays all ingredients for each product in their online store.

Savonnerie Gluten Free Soaps [D], [F1] We are very happy with the product line and will continue to use it. (We purchased the sampler collection). We are using this product for all our kids and find that it does a beautiful job of keeping them clean without causing their skin to get red and blotchy or dry and flaky. Corn-free soaps are hard to find, so we were very happy that this company is dedicated to people suffering multiple allergies. It is also soy, fragrance, and dye free. If you use their soap products with small infants and toddlers be aware that the soap will sting if it enters the eye.

ShiKai Natural Everyday Shampoo and Conditioner [D], [F] We are currently using this product. It is my new favorite because it cleans our hair well without leaving a buildup. I have inquired on allergy forums and have found a positive response for this product among corn allergy sufferers. I have contacted the company to determine whether or not this product can be officially classified as ‘corn-free’. I will update as soon as I get a response. For more information call: (800) 448-0298.

Tate’s Family Natural Miracle Shampoo and Conditioner [D], [F] We have not personally tested this product, but have heard rave reviews about it from corn allergy sufferers. Snacks

Crackers

Conrad Rice Mill’s Hol Grain Crackers [D], [F1] These are light rectangular wafers that have very little flavor on their own. They would nicely compliment any type of homemade dip you make as they are not too brittle to hold the weight. Flavor is slightly bitter. The only ingredient in these crackers is brown rice.

Individually Wrapped Cookies, Fruit and Nut Snacks

Larabar 18 Bar Variety Pack (apple pie, lemon bar, cherry pie) [D], [F1 and F2] 1-877-LARABAR. I found this product at COSTCO.

Nana’s Cookies. We talked with Nana’s Cookies a few months back and they told us their gluten-free products are also corn-free. They informed me that they use a baking powder without cornstarch but their cookies do contain xanthan gum, (which is grown on corn), so if you are very sensitive you may get a reaction. Cookies come individually wrapped and can be easily stored in your freezer if you buy in bulk. Some of Nana’s cookies can be found at Whole Foods, but not all are gluten-free, so do read the labels. We ordered in bulk online from the company and keep our cookies in the freezer. Nana’s Cookies can be reached at: 1-800-836-7534.

Commercially Made Cookies, Mini-Cookies, Biscotti

Enjoy Life Foods [D], [F2] Chewy Chocolate Chip (contains vanilla), Double Chocolate Brownie (contains vanilla), Gingerbread Spice, Happy Apple Cookies, Lively Lemon, No Oats Oatmeal (contains vanilla), and Snickerdoodle (contains vanilla). Enjoy Life states: “Our vanilla is distilled with corn alcohol; all corn protein is removed in the distillation process. Thus, our vanilla contains no corn protein and is tolerated by most corn-free people.” In our case we have had no problem with any of their cookie varieties (although we haven’t tried the apple or lemon varieties yet!). All their cookie varieties contain xanthan gum as a stabilizer, so those that are highly sensitive to corn may want to avoid this product.
Pamela’s Products Biscotti [F1] These snacks are not dairy free because they contain butter. They come in three flavors: Almond Anise, Chocolate Walnut, and Lemon Almond. This product does contain xanthan gum, so those that are highly sensitive to corn may want to avoid this product.

Pamela’s Products Simple Bites [D], [F1] This snack comes in two varieties: Chocolate Chip Mini Cookies (which may have traces of milk protein due to manufacturing process) and Ginger Mini Snaps which has no dairy and no chance of cross-contamination. This product does contain xantham gum, so those that are highly sensitive to corn may want to avoid this product.
