Healthy-Family is celebrating our very first birthday this month. Since that time we have provided over 135 posts from six different authors about varying topics such as eco living, parenting, health and nutrition, crafts, technology, education, and allergies. Over 118,000 folks have viewed our site and we have been privileged to have nearly 30 individuals subscribe to us as well.

As recently as January we launched our allergy specific forum, which now has 22 members and includes many free recipes within its pages. We hope to expand both the website and the forum in our second year and have plans for many more articles in the future. (more…)

Need to go Gluten and Maize (Corn)-Free? (GF-MF) Here’s a Getting Started Guide

Gluten-free Corn-free

Gluten is the term we use to describe the mixture of proteins, including gliadins, that are found in wheat grains, barley, and rye. Gluten, quite simply, means ‘glue’. And the term is appropriate because it is that glue-like quality found in these grains that make them ideal ingredients in our baked and prepackaged goods. The sticky quality of gluten has given it value in non-edible markets such as the production of paper and fabric glue. It is also used as cattle feed and as an initial ingredient in the manufacturing process of monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Most of us have a remote understanding of celiac’s disease, the seemingly rare autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that causes damage to the intestinal villi, thus triggering a whole host of health problems, nutritional deficiencies, and possible colon cancer if left untreated. (more…)

Developmental Delays in Toddlers May Be Due to a Lack of Fat

Meat

The next time you trim the fat off of a steak or pour all the grease drippings out of your frying pan, consider the starving children in the third world who could actually use that fat to improve their brain power. We live in the same world, but Americans and our third world neighbors have two varying views on fat. Americans loath it. Fat keeps us from having washboard abs and enviable waistlines, but (more…)

Obesity Is Killing US

On Diet

“Losing weight would improve your health” - I was telling my patient last week during a consultation. His light-hearted response concerned me: “I am not obese, doctor, you’re too skinny. Everybody in my neighborhood is this size. And I like being big.”

Everyone in his neighborhood is indeed getting bigger. As the average size of the typical American grows each year, so does the tolerance for being big. I am concerned that our mass media “experts” have taken the social stigma out of fatness and made people blissfully ignorant of its health risks. Advertising, television programs, and movies that promote obesity as normal directly ignore its threat to health and well being. (more…)

Good Nutrition Lessens Susceptibility of Lead Poisoning

Poison

Families who continually eat healthy, well-balanced diets are clinically less susceptible to lead toxicity. This is a well recognized fact that has been documented throughout the 20th century, beginning as early as the 1920s [1].

In general, frequent eating causes less lead to be absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. When a person ingests lead with an empty stomach, however, it is absorbed at a much higher level. One study reported that lead on an empty stomach was 35% absorbed while 8.2% of lead ingested with food was absorbed

Vegetables

Prior to beginning any type of drug therapy program, the first thing a parent should do when their child begins to exhibit behavioral problems in school is take a serious look at their son or daughter’s diet. Recent studies have shown that food allergies or sensitivities can cause hyperactivity in children, and in many cases it can also be the cause of neurological dysfunction.

Children exhibiting attention difficulties, hyperactivity, irritability, and other behavioral problems can often times see a relief of symptoms by simply eliminating problem foods and beginning a proper diet and supplement program.
