A new report from the International Journal of Biological Sciences has found Monsanto’s three most popular varieties of GM corn (NK 603, MON 810, and MON 863) to cause organ damage in rats, contrary to an earlier study done by Monsanto that led to U.S. government approval of these GM seeds.
The French study completed by Joël Spiroux de Vendômois, François Roullier, Dominique Cellier, and Gilles-Eric Séralini from the universities of Rouen and Caen, was much more comprehensive and included six ‘reference’ groups, or control groups, which ate non GM corn. The test rats were fed for 90 days, and unlike the Monsanto study, were fed a much higher content of GM corn. (Monsanto’s study fed their animal subjects only 11% GM corn.) …read the rest of this entry »

In a study recently released, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services claims there is a strong link between IgE food allergies and obesity in children. The study included national data from 4,111 children ages 2-19 and found that obese children were 59% more likely to have IgE mediated food allergies than children of normal weight. …read the rest of this entry »

As the Director of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Food and Health Program Dr. David Wallinga is pleased to announce a brand new web-based Brain Food SelectorTM. It is a database that will help the average person easily find foods containing synthetic dyes.
Consumers will now be able to search by brand, product type, or specific food dye. The IATP’s Smart Guide to Food Dyes also describes why synthetic food dyes are used, gives valuable information about associated children’s health concerns and offers things parents can do to avoid buying products laced with these dyes. …read the rest of this entry »

The AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal, Science, will be hosting their annual meeting in Chicago this year.
It is a great opportunity for area families to teach their kids about Earth sciences: past, present, and future. And most importantly, many of the sessions are free on Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th: plenary sessions, topical lectures, Family Science Days, the Main Exhibit Hall, Wizardry With Light: Freeze, Teleport and Go! and Harnessing the Sun and Oceans to Meet the World’s Energy Demands. Participants should be aware that in order to attend the lectures listed on the website as free they will have to register as either a student or a teacher that day and pay a fee anywhere from $90-$200. Family activities on the specified family days are free to the public and do not require registration. …read the rest of this entry »

The results of the new survey are not too surprising for those who follow health news. According to a new survey done by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 13 % of adults in the U.S. have diabetes, and 40% of them don’t realize it and are walking around undiagnosed. Experts have been claiming disease rates are reaching epidemic proportions. There are many folks not yet diagnosed with diabetes but they are suffering from pre-diabetic symptoms and these raise their risk of developing a pre-diabetic heart attack or stroke.
Such sobering news for Americans. But we are not the only Westernized country battling this disease at epic proportions. According to the Telegraph, Britain’s epidemic is threatening to cause the first decrease in national life expectancy in over 200 years. In fact, this condition has seen a drastic rise over the past few decades in third world countries as well (Diabetes in Adults is Now a Third World Problem). India is one such place where modernization has resulted in a huge increase in diagnoses. So what can we do, if anything, to curb this global trend? …read the rest of this entry »

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy released two new studies to the public yesterday that have found mercury in common foods sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.
The report summarizes how this happens: “In making HFCS, caustic soda is used, among other things, to separate corn starch from the corn kernel. For decades, HFCS has been made using mercury-grade caustic soda produced in industrial chlorine (chlor-alkali) plants. The use of mercury cells to produce caustic soda can contaminate caustic soda, and ultimately HFCS, with mercury.”
According to Environmental Health:
Mercury was found in nearly 50% of tested samples of commercial high fructose corn syrup.” Ben Lilliston of The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) reports that in a followup study they detected mercury in “nearly one-third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled ingredient– including products by Quaker, Hershey’s, Kraft, and Smucker.
In his report Lilliston claims that the average American consumes about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS and some kids and teens can be consuming up to nearly 80% more than that. …read the rest of this entry »

The first genetically modified corn crop was developed in 1996 and despite many controvercial discussions about its safety, until now there hasn’t been a long term study on the effects of including such foods into our diets. But thanks to the work of an Austrian group, a new study, “Biological effects of transgenic maize NK603xMON810 fed in long term reproduction studies in mice” has been published. …read the rest of this entry »
